Photographed in the Dolomites, Italy · July 14, 2025
On July 14, 2025, I finally stood before the Dolomites. Ever since I saw its image, it became my heavenly place to visit, a dream to be held. I came for a photograph and left with a poem. This is what the mountains, the last light, and one small church gave me that evening.
Light on the Peaks, She in My Heart
She said:
Wait for me before that distant valley of white clouds.
Wait until the last ray of gold kisses the summit.
Wait while I cross wind and forest, meadow and snow,
until I arrive before you with all of my heart.
And so I set out,
racing along the spine of the Dolomites.
Green slopes wound beneath my feet; my pulse passed a hundred.
My fingertips trembled, my palms were damp
as I raised the tripod that holds time still —
the lens, like faith, steadier than anything.
Far off, I saw her:
small and quiet, standing in a sea of green,
like a single tear in the stream of time,
like a beam of light glowing in a dream.
Behind her rose the jagged blades of the Odle peaks,
a row of stone cathedrals walked out of the Middle Ages.
The setting sun set them on fire,
and before the blue hour fell
they burned like light from the Apocalypse.
She never speaks.
She looks so small, yet stands so sure,
as if born for this valley alone —
made for stillness, standing for those who gaze.
She has no great dome, no tolling bells, no lavish splendor,
yet she moves me more than any grand hall.
She needs no ornament.
Standing between the finest light and the highest peaks,
she has already become a sanctuary in the hearts of many.
I came from thousands of miles away
for this moment of gold, this silent watch.
True beauty needs no announcement.
It hides in the quietest corner,
waiting only for the one willing to make the journey —
to stand, and simply gaze.
About the Place
The church at the center of the frame is the Church of Santa Maddalena (Chiesa di Santa Maddalena). It stands in the village of Santa Maddalena in Val di Funes, a valley in Italy’s South Tyrol region.
Behind it rise the Odle (Geisler) peaks of the Dolomites. At sunset they glow gold and red above the green meadows, which makes this valley one of the most cherished spots for photographers and travelers in the Alps.
